Description: Ithaca Style cable railing and custom floating staircase.
This country home in Katonah, New York sits within a beautiful, heavily-wooded lot. In 2011, the homeowner began planning a major renovation to make the home better reflect her personal style. She wanted to add a bit of modern flare to the existing traditional design and create a unique, self-tailored look.
Our client knew that above all, she wanted a floating staircase with open risers that would create visibility throughout her home’s main entryway and great room. We designed a custom staircase with two stringers made from 8” by 2” steel tubes. The steel was given a powder coat for texture and for a black color. For the wood treads, the homeowner chose Brazilian cherry, also known as jatoba. The wood was pre-finished in a controlled environment with three coats of MagnaMax pre-catalyzed lacquer to improve scratch resistance.
For the staircase railing, we fabricated an Ithaca Style railing system with “Raven Black” powder-coated steel posts and a Brazilian cherry wood top rail to match the stair treads.
