Double Stringer Floating Stairs – Finger Lakes, NY
Location: Finger Lakes, NY
Architect: Architect: Design Works Architecture, P.C.
Material and Finish: Steel double stringer staircase with a zigzag design giving the appearance of slicing through the white oak treads. The stringers are made of steel plate and feature a textured black powder coat finish. The railing is our Ithaca style that is distinguished by slender posts that are custom designed to connect directly to the steel stringer. The White Oak stair treads encase the steel stringer supports and cap off the ends, enhancing the illusion of floating treads.
Description: Custom-crafted, multi-level floating staircase featuring dual zigzag stringer design and complemented by our sleek Ithaca style cable railing system.
We designed this double stringer floating stairs system to be as clean and simple-looking as possible. With no visible steel stringer underneath, giving the illusion that the treads are floating. The stair is crafted from a zig-zag steel plate that appears to slice through the treads like a knife. The thick wood treads have wood caps on the ends which conceal the zig-zag-shaped steel stringers. Our Ithaca-style cable railing system enhances the streamlined appearance with 1-1/2-inch solid steel posts attached to the stringers.
The goal of the design was to keep an open and airy aesthetic and let as much light in as possible from surrounding windows. The staircase chandelier creates a striking focal point as it spans multiple levels making a dramatic statement when combined with the open staircase design.
