Curved Floating Staircase – Cayuga, NY
Location: Cayuga, NY
Architect: Donahoe Group
Material and Finish: The staircase features a custom fabricated hollow formed curved stringer, made from laser cut steel plate, roll formed and welded into a monolithic sculptural form. The floating brownstone steps are fully supported with thick steel plates. Steel spars support the stone clad landing above. The entire structure was analyzed using Finite Element Analysis to ensure it could accomodate the weight of the brownstone treads and tiled landing. Adding to the flow of the curves the railing posts are the curved Keuka Style made of steel. The finish is "Oil Rubbed Bronze" powder coat to complement the color scheme of the homes exterior.
Description: The scope of this project encompassed the construction of a large curved steel sculptural staircase for the exterior of the beach house with access to the roof, as well as Keuka-style curved cable railings for the rooftop deck, dock, and main house decks.
When the Donahoe Group of architects reached out to us, they explained that their project was so complex and challenging in terms of engineering and fabrication of the staircase that none of their usual fabricators were willing to take it on.
So, the expert team at Keuka Studios embraced the challenge, of designing and crafting a mono-stringer curved floating staircase that not only met the architects’ demanding criteria but also stands as a true work of art. The stairs twist up from the ground to the rooftop walkway while supporting the weight of brownstone on the steel treads and landing. Engineered for structural integrity and aesthetic appeal, the staircase includes CNC-machined housings that discreetly conceal LED lighting and wiring. In addition, our curved Keuka Style cable railing system flows around the entire property, integrating the main house decks, docks, and rooftop to create a cohesive and unified exterior design. The result? A striking visual centerpiece that captivates and inspire
