Material and Finish: The double zig-zag stair stringers are crafted from steel and fnished with a durable powder coating in "Raven Texture Black". The 5/8 inch round steel spindles are also made of steel and powder-coated to match the stringers finish. The stair treads, landings and handrails are constructed from white oak. The same metal spindle and wood tread style is featured in the guest house and main house creating a cohesive connection between the interior designs of both spaces.
Description: This project featured a newly constructed home and a modern guest house, both showcasing modern interior stairs and railings. The guest house was designed with an emphasis on indoor outdoor living with large expansive windows that frame the views to the patio and pool. Therefore, the staircase in the main living space of the guest house were designed to minimally block the views while complementing the modern interior aesthetic. Additionally, the homeowners desired design elements from the guest house to be incorporated into the main house. To acheive this, the project included matching spindle railings, and wood treads for both the main house and the guest house creating a chohesive look throughout.
S.M.Roethke Designs, Inc presented us with their clients’ vision inspired by two of our past custom stair projects. They loved the zig-zag double stringer stair style from one and the metal spindle railing from another and asked us to bring them together. We love a good design challenge! So, we brought our creative team together to design a solution tailored to the space. Key project details included a top rail that seamlessly transitioned across the posts and flowed gracefully to the floor, forming a sleek newel post. The wood stair treads were designed with pockets to hide the tread supports, and holes were predrilled in the stair tread to ensure a smooth and efficient spindle installation. The blend of the black steel stringer and spindles with the warm hues of the white oak create a perfect balance of modern and rustic elements.
To achieve the level of precision necessary to create the staircases and railings, we started by visiting the site with our laser scanner to capture accurate measurements of both the guest house and the main house. Using this data we created realistic renderings for review and approval, once the designs were finalized we fabricated the stairs and railings and shipped the finished product directly to the site on Nantucket.
