Material and Finish: Modern floating stairs featuring a fabricated hollow steel stringer with sleek square edges, finished in a "Raven Texture Black" powder coat. White oak stair treads seamlessly integrate with the stringer, creating the illusion of slicing into it. Cable railings made with steel posts wrap the interior and exterior stairs and balconies.
Description: We designed and fabricated a unique mono-stringer staircase with our Ithaca cable railing system that wraps the stairs and balconies for the interior of the home. In addition, the same cable railing system is used on the exterior balconies creating synergy with the interior.
Our task for this project was to design a floating staircase that seamlessly complements the straight, clean lines and rectilinear forms of the architecture and interior design while embodying a minimalist and modern aesthetic. Doyle Coffin Architects challenged us to accomplish this, so our talented team designed a unique hollow-form stringer staircase for their project. The stringer has crisp square edges and the thick white oak treads appear to slice through the stinger. Additionally, the hardware is concealed within the stinger and no visible tread plates are used, preserving the clean and simple lines of the design.
The home’s exterior is thoughtfully designed with distinct zones tailored to the purpose of the space, prevailing weather, and desired privacy. The homeowners opted for our Ithaca-style cable railing system to maximize the breathtaking lake views. This minimalist design features slim posts and cables that virtually vanish from sight, allowing the stunning scenery to take center stage. Whether in the dining room, kitchen, or bedroom looking out at the views there is a sense of continuity and easy flow.
