Q:
Can I use a wider
spacing between the posts?
A:
Vertical cable spacing, post to post spacing, post rigidity and cable tension all work together in a system to prevent a 4 inch ball from passing through the cables(a requirement of most building codes). Therefore, maximum post spacing should be 42 inches or less. This diagram should help explain.
To help understand this better, lets exaggerate the post spacings, you can see how a wider post spacing would make it to easy to flex the cables.

Q:
What type of wood do you recommend for the top rail?
A:
We like IPE (EE-PAY) or Brazilain walnut, for outdoor applications. Its very resistant to rot, insects, UV exposure, ice, salt, abrasion, splintering, chemicals and has a Class A fire rated. The superior strength, stability, and durability make it particularly useful for a top rail or decking. IPE is rated by the US Forest Products Lab for 25 years plus. Various shapes and sizes are avaialable from Bristol Valley Hardwoods, they ship nationwide.
